Score Sample: Godzilla (2014)

We've got a new Star Wars film coming out in 2016, and it is the first one that isn't part of the original series of films. It is a side story that occurred before events of A New Hope. But this film also shares the distinction of being the first live action Star Wars film to not feature a score by John Williams. I know, shocking!

Instead we are getting a score from the talented French composer Alexandre Desplat. Desplat has worked as a film composer for years now. While he is best known for his scores to drama and romance films, he has composed some fun fantasy scores for Rise of the Guardians and The Golden Compass. But more to the point, he also scored the last two Harry Potter films, and did so using themes created by John Williams. So maybe Desplat isn't quite the odd choice.

That said, I have to say his amazing work on the 2014 version of Godzilla is really something else. Here is a bombastic action sequence called Last Shot. The track is brutal and intense. I'm looking forward to hearing what Desplat cooks up for Rogue One.

Godzilla has been known to stomp on people who don't click an ad before they go.

  1. Yes, it's unfortunate for Star Wars/ Williams fans, but that's age for you, and some point in time passing the baton happens to us all. He sure was a good composer though.

    1. Yes, Williams is very selective about the films he works on these days. He continues working with Steven Spielberg, and will work on the upcoming Star Wars films in the main series. But these side stories will have different composers.

I'm actually looking forward to hearing what these other composers come up with for the Star Wars universe. Some of the video game music that used original music was really good.
